Potentially Harmful GM Rice Tested on Children

In a letter to senior scientists at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Vandana Shiva, Mae-Wan Ho, and other experts on the health and environmental effects of genetic engineering expressed shock and dismay early this year at experiments being conducted involving the feeding of GM Golden Rice to children and adults. The rice in question has never been evaluated or approved anywhere in the world. “Our greatest concern is that this rice, which is engineered to overproduce beta carotene, has never been tested in animals, “ the authorities warned, “and there is an extensive medical literature showing that retinoids that can be derived from beta carotene are both toxic and cause birth defects.”
